About Me: A Little about Herman Lockeby
Howdy, I am Herman Lockeby. I am originally from West Texas, but now live in Las Vegas, Nevada where I have resided since 1992.
I was a farmer, producing cotton, grain
and livestock until I sold out in 1981 and
started in the petroleum industry in the
Permian Basin (Midland – Odessa area)
of Texas. I retired to Las Vegas, Nevada
in 1992 at the age of 45.
After a year of retirement, I returned to the petroleum industry, but this time, instead of dealing in Crude Oil, I was delivering fuel
(diesel, jet fuel and gasoline by 18 wheeler tankers and loving it.
This was cut short on 08/02/2000.
My tanker was hit from behind by an out
of control truck that was being towed and
broke loose from the towing truck, hitting
my tanker and starting a fire. My tanker
was loaded with 8700 gallons of gasoline
at the time of the collision.
I have been told that I
was very lucky to survive this accident, but
I believe there was a Higher Power looking
out for me on that day.
A lot of people were upset because of
the inconvenience caused to them
by this accident causing the freeway
to be closed for 8 hours, beginning
about 1:45 PM
Four surgeries and ten months of physical therapy and I was in a pretty fair condition, considering the condition I was in.
Perhaps I didn’t learn all that I should have from that experience.
On August 4, 2004 I was admitted into Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas for another surgery. This was due to Lung Cancer. This surgery was
to remove a large part of my left lung. I remained in a coma for ten days following the surgery. Thirteen day hospital stay and back home.
December 24, 2010 I was admitted into Centennial Hills Hospital with pneumonia. Yes I spent Christmas in the hospital. Sure are a
lot of better places to be for Christmas. I am thankful to be home again, but I do have to have medical oxygen now. I have an oxygen
concentrator to use around the house and portable tanks when I need to go somewhere.
I guess I didn’t realize just how precious
life is, until I came close to losing it.
I will be spending a lot of time at home now. I am thankful to have a computer and the World Wide Web. Maybe I will be able to help someone in some small way. There are a lot of people less fortunate than me.
Yeah, I’m in pretty good shape for the shape I’m in. Maybe I can give something back.
